Can I Drink My Fancy Coffee in Peace, PLEASE?

It happens every time. “You know you would save a lot of money if you made your coffee at home?” OF COURSE, I would. But, the satisfaction of ordering my beverage from my favorite coffee shop gives me a high that pushes me through the dreaded Monday.

Burn, Baby, Burn

How much would I be saving?

It’s not THAT much over the course of a year. If you work in healthcare, like I do, you value the precious time spent sipping that liquid gold. The average dollar amount spent among those in healthcare annually is around $440. That is $1.20 per day. I have clothes, purses, and jewelry more expensive than that.

What would I be sacrificing?

1. Sanity: If not for my morning caffeinated beverage from Starbucks, I would be dreadful at maintaining my abnormal peppy spirit every morning in the hospital.

2. Productivity: Without my magic bean juice from Dunkin Donuts, I would be hours behind in paperwork, leaving me to be at work HOURS, not minutes, longer than I anticipated. The last workout class of the day is at 5:30 pm and I refuse to miss out on one of my positive self care tasks.

3. Relationship Status: Deprived of my rocket fuel from Chik-Fil-A, I would, inevitably, be single. I go from cranky, sleepy, morning gremlin to perky, lively, princess in the blink of a sip.

These reasons are why I am gifted gift cards from friends, family, employees, and students every year. They give me the joy of buying my fancy coffee and I give them the pleasure of engaging with a fully charged adult and employee. Everyone wins.

So, please let me drink my fancy coffee in peace. I promise, I understand the consequences of what I am spending. But I also know the consequences of relinquishing my inner demons if I were to stop. Coffee at home is not the same. I tried to buy Starbucks cold brew at the store, it still brings me less satisfaction than when the nice barista hands me my plastic cup of joy and says “Have a nice day!” The world will go on, I will buy my coffee, and you can complain about something else.
